Conservative Derek Merrin Launches Campaign for Congress

Dec 20, 2023

A Proven Leader with a Backbone Running to Defeat Marcy Kaptur

LUCAS COUNTY – State Representative Derek Merrin, leader of the Ohio House Republicans, announced his candidacy for Ohio’s 9th Congressional District.

The 37-year-old Republican leader is known for winning over split-ticket voters in Democrat areas, while leading conservative Republicans at the statehouse. Ohio’s 9th Congressional District is seen as a key pick-up opportunity for House Republicans to expand their majority in Congress.

“Ohio needs a proven conservative leader with a backbone who is able to defeat Marcy Kaptur and put our country back on the right path,” said Representative Merrin. “Growing up in Northwest Ohio, I have witnessed the broken policies pushed for decades by Marcy Kaptur and Joe Biden that repeatedly fail our community.”

“From serving as one of the youngest mayors in Ohio to having the honor representing our community in Columbus, I have stood up to the radical left to fight for a stronger economy, lower taxes, safer neighborhoods, and a more transparent government for the people. Now, it’s time to take this fight to Washington where I will stop Marcy Kaptur and Joe Biden’s extreme liberal agenda that is destroying our nation,” Representative Merrin said.

Representative Merrin continued, “I’ve never been afraid to face down slings and arrows from the left or challenge my own party. I cannot sit back and hand away this seat to Marcy Kaptur, jeopardizing the future of our country. I look forward to crisscrossing the district over the coming months as we push forward to bring Marcy Kaptur back home and restore strong, conservative leadership to Washington.”

Mitchell Brown, Director of Political Strategy at Cygnal, stated,“Derek will provide a tough challenge to Marcy in Lucas County, because it’s his hometown turf. Derek’s success in the blue-collar rings around Toledo poses a real threat to Kaptur’s ability to hold a seat in a redrawn district.”

As the first action of his campaign, Merrin formally endorsed President Donald J. Trump for re-election, saying: “It’s clear Joe Biden is destroying America, and Marcy Kaptur is nothing more than a rubber stamp for his failed policies. Donald Trump is going to be the next President, and I’m proud to endorse him on day one. As our next Congressman, I’ll work hand-in-hand with President Trump to put our country back on track when he is back in the White House.”
